Depression TherapyDo you feel low moods, low energy? Are you having a difficult time getting up, going to work, feeling motivated for daily tasks? Does your mind feel like it is in a dark place unable to focus on positive things? Do you feel hopeless, helpless?
You may be experiencing a depression. At the bottom of this page, the symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder are listed such as sad mood, hopelessness, decreased energy, difficulty concentrating and more. At Indigo, we have counseled many people who have depression and understand the pain of feeling hopeless, worthless or unmotivated. You may have family or friends who don't understand and just think you are lazy or weak minded. They might think you should just pull yourself up by your boot straps. "Get off the couch damn it!" they might say. But we both know that having depression is not about being lazy, weak or unwilling to change or try. When one is in a depression it is like a force, a grey vortex stronger than we are holds us back, compels us towards inaction, keeps us stuck. We are learning more about the brain and our physiology and how depression is to some degree biochemical. Medication, diet and exercise can be helpful in altering brain chemistry to let in more dopamine, endorphins and serotonin and thus also let in more positive feeling and happiness. But what if you don't want to take medication or you are already on medication and still experiencing depression? Research shows that psychotherapy, with or without medication, is helpful in reducing depression. Therapy can help people to work on thought patterns that contribute to depression, work on grief, pain, or struggle, and work on behavioral strategies to create movement again. You might be thinking that you have done counseling before and feel discouraged that you are depressed again. Sometimes people do experience more than one depression in their lives. It's okay to check in with a therapist to see if you can learn some new approaches or strategies for dealing with depression. Having tools for depression in your personal tool box can help if you get down in the future. We are here to help!
